“Get after it!”
“Make it happen!”
“You’ve got this!”

We’ve all heard these phrases. Many of us (myself included) have said them with the best of intentions. They sound energetic, positive and empowering. They’re the go-to language of encouragement in locker rooms, offices and social media captions.

But let’s pause for a moment and ask a critical question: Do these phrases actually help anyone?

The Problem with Pep Talks

At first glance, these motivational catchphrases seem harmless—even helpful. But take a closer look, and you’ll find they’re often more confusing than clarifying.

    • What is “it”?
    • How exactly do I “go do it”?
    • What’s the strategy, the plan, the next step?
    • And what happens when I try and fail … again?

Empty encouragement without direction can leave people feeling lost. Instead of inspired, they may feel overwhelmed or discouraged, especially when trying to lead teams, grow a business or navigate uncertainty.

And I’ll be the first to admit: I’ve used these phrases in the past. Looking back, I cringe a little. Not because my intent was wrong, but because I now understand how ineffective vague encouragement can be when someone is seeking clarity and direction.

What’s the Alternative?

At Langley Leadership Group, we believe leadership requires more than motivational noise. It requires intentionality, strategy and accountability. As a premier franchise of Leadership Management International (LMI), we work with individuals and organizations to define what success truly looks like—not in broad, vague terms, but in clear, actionable goals.

We help you answer the essential questions:

    • What is “it” that you’re trying to achieve?
    • Why does it matter?
    • What’s currently getting in the way?
    • And what specific actions will get you there?

We’re not here to pump you up with buzzwords or leave you with warm feelings and no game plan. In fact, some of the most powerful moments in our coaching process happen when we confront difficult truths and uncomfortable realities. Progress begins when we stop avoiding the hard stuff.

Real Change Starts with Clarity

Too often, we settle for leadership that sounds good but doesn’t do good. But when you take the time to define your goals, understand your challenges, and commit to personal and professional growth, that’s when transformation happens.
